Serving Beyond HCA: Operation Christmas Child

This year’s junior class service project was one worth remembering. I would do it all over again in a heart beat! It was not at all what I expected it to be. The junior class at HCA drove to Denver earlier this month to help pack boxes to be shipped overseas for Operation Christmas Child.

When our class arrived at our station and got into the routine, there was already spirit of energy moving around. And getting to hang out with Mrs. Humphrey, Mrs. Huffman, Mrs. Warner, and Mr. Cuckler was amazing. Dancing around to Christmas music and answering Mr. Cuckler’s fun questions got the group into a energized mood. We were not just working with each other, but we were working as a team. Our goal was to put all our heart and effort into the packaging the boxes, so that many children could receive the joy we had getting the boxes ready for them. We even created a game to add to the excitement. Whoever, between Daniel, Austin, Vivien and I, could sort the greatest amount of boxes would get an imaginary prize (which is nothing really just something we put out there to make it competitive). Though in the end the rules to the game were changed about 3 times, the amount of boxes sorted by our class was about 2,100 boxes.

The thought of how many children in the world would be impacted by our efforts that day really inspired me. I would really love to do this project again with the class.
